“but I say to you….”
Following Jesus is
not like flipping a coin and choosing sides.
It is not random but intentional;
it is trying; it is challenging.
Listening to Jesus, we
encounter our deepest human desires;
revealing messy ways life can take us…
we can be overcome by anger
no on wants to be ruled by it
some may hold a grudge against another
no one wants their life to be held by the force of enmity
some may divorce so that they may remarry,
no one marries so that they may divorce.
Jesus delivers us from the worst in ourselves
that we may embrace the best God intends for us all.
…. if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell.
‘It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ But I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
… And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let your word be ‘Yes, Yes’ or ‘No, No’; anything more than this comes from the evil one. Matthew 5:28-37
