What did Thomas Expect?
A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.” John 20:29
What was Thomas thinking
when he heard that Jesus was alive again,
after the crucifixion?
Did he imagine Jesus still grimacing
in pain, his hands still dripping with blood?
(these kind of dystopian images seem to be popular now.)
Did he expect Jesus to be out to exact revenge
on Pilate, Caiaphas and all the rest;
to berate Peter for leaving him and rail
at the other disciples for abandoning him
in his time of need?
Jesus proved to be just what Thomas needed,
but wasn’t fully aware in the moment,
… an Oasis of peace in a tempest-torn world;
a safe port in a storm.
Jesus was what he had always been, filled
with life, love, forgiveness and friendship,
deeper and more real than he ever knew before.
It made Thomas think some more about who
this Jesus was, and he was forever changed
in the encounter.
I wonder where and how this
newly Risen Jesus will be meeting you?
