‘Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will open.’ (Matthew 7:7)
We are not slow at asking- for the wrong things,
we are energetic in seeking- just exactly what we want,
and we are experts at knocking- on doors manned by those
with whom we are well connected.
Please get it into our ever-anxious minds
that you are neither a divine vending machine,
nor an irresponsible parent who gives into
their child’s passing parade of wishes.
You are only interested in giving truly good gifts;
the ones which, in our given situation,
will be best for us and for those around us.
So, Holy One,
get at our thoughts before they become words,
that our asking may be to fulfil your will, not ours.
Create in us a thirst that inspires our seeking
and guide us to those particular doors
which will open into new avenues of faith and service.
Then, loving God,
even though we may not understand
the strange workings of your providence,
we shall be able to play our part
in the work of you ever-arriving kingdom,
from here to eternity.
