Shepherds are Heroes (after a blog by Nancy Rockwell)
Although shepherds are not heroic, by nature,
in the Bible, heroes are mostly shepherd-like;
not bellicose, warlike, vengeful, or seeking
victory at all costs;
but large-hearted, deeply caring and ready to
risk for the least and the lost.
True shepherds are deeply faithful.
Compassion is the vaunted quality of the shepherd; how it is that
the sheep respond in kind, I don’t know….
The Good Shepherd stays with the sheep in all that befalls.
The staying Presence, is what is holy. Not valor. Not swordsmanship. Not battle glory in battle.
Presence, even in the valley of the shadow of death, offers the hope of return from peril.
This is the holiness the Shepherd God bestows.
“I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep.”
John 10: 14,15
