More than Just a Branch

It’s this Sunday’s treat- to wave a thin, wobbly
Palm frond and shout (in an appropriately
modulated voice), “Hosanna!”

There are more reasons
than you know why they did this
long ago.

Not just to keep the dust down
on the dry and rocky path
that Jesus used to enter
the Holy City that day;
or as a substitute for their robes…

Palms were the emblem of Judea
and symbolized the wealth of the region.

Palms were more useful than you know, as well.
There was no waste to a Palm tree; dates and sugar,
flax and fiber, palm oil, perfume and more
came from the plant – it’s all was given
to the people it shaded.

And so also the One who paraded
through the gathered crowd,
riding a humble mule,
gave his all.

What do we have to give in return?
How can we humbly serve the needs
of those who have not,
in Jesus’ name?
The next day the great crowd that had come to the festival heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, shouting,
“Hosanna!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord—
the King of Israel!” John 12:12-13
